Best of 2013! Men and women use uptalk differently.
A sociologist studied “uptalk” — ending your statements with a question-like lilt — on Jeopardy! and discovered that men use it most when they’re losing and women when they’re winning. Why?
“Men use uptalk as a way to signal uncertainty.”
And also to soften the blow when correcting women, but not other men.
Women used uptalk to “apologize for their success.”
